Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) held its highly anticipated 2025 Semi-Annual Meeting on February 7 at the Dakota Dunes Resort in Whitecap, Saskatchewan. The event brought together members, partners, and guests for a day of reflection, recognition, and celebration of excellence within the Saskatchewan livestock industry. During the meeting members discussed key developments, resolutions, and strategies for the future of the organization and the livestock sector. The evening concluded with a special awards banquet to recognize individuals whose contributions have had a lasting impact on the industry and their community. During the banquet, five remarkable individuals were presented with Honour Scrolls for their exceptional work and leadership. The 2025 Honour Scroll recipients included Matthew Flaman of Vibank, SK; Wayne and Linda Libke of Hanley, SK; and Lloyd and Jean Thompson of Estevan, SK. “We are proud to continue the tradition of recognizing individuals who demonstrate unwavering commitment to the Saskatchewan livestock industry,” said SSGA President Jeff Yorga. “The Honour Scroll program, established in 1927, honours the dedication, leadership, and vision of those who have made significant contributions to our sector and our province.” SSGA would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all members, partners, and guests who joined us for this event. The Semi-Annual Meeting provided an opportunity to celebrate our industry’s successes while addressing key issues and resolutions that will shape the path forward. Key Resolutions Passed at the AGM:
Environmental Conservation Policies:SSGA will create guiding policies around environmental conservation, which will be ratified by its membership.
Bovine Tuberculosis and Chronic Wasting Disease:SSGA will lobby the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment to create a strategy to address and eradicate these diseases.
Grazing Co-operative Lease Agreements:SSGA will work to ensure that the Government of Saskatchewan pauses any changes to grazing co-operative lease agreements that include a hunting clause until full consultations with grazing co-operatives are completed.
Cattle Price Compensation:SSGA will lobby Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Canadian Food Inspection Agency to update cattle prices in the compensation schedule, reflecting the significant increase in cattle prices since 2015.
Agricultural Water Stewardship Policy:SSGA will advocate for a re-evaluation of the proposed Agricultural Water Stewardship Policy to ensure it does not harm livestock producers’ economic standing.
Retaliatory Tariffs:SSGA will work with the Saskatchewan government and national associations to protect Canadian consumers and producers from retaliatory tariffs and to prevent the imposition of additional barriers to market access.
Market Access:In light of federal discussions regarding financial support for consumers and producers impacted by U.S. tariffs, SSGA will lobby for funding to be directed towards developing business activity in new markets, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), pipelines, and food production.
“These resolutions mark an important step in addressing the challenges our members face while also laying the groundwork for future opportunities,” said Jeff Yorga. “We are confident that the actions taken today will help strengthen our industry and ensure a prosperous future for livestock producers across Saskatchewan.”
